youtube dl is a command-line program to download videos from YouTube. It also supports some other websites too. YouTube-DL is a cross platform tool and is available on Windows, Linux & OS X. It requires the Python interpreter (2.6, 2.7, or 3.2+).

Some of the features of youtube-dl are:

  • Resuming interrupted downloads
  • Downloading all video files from a play-list
  • Extracting mp3 from video files
  • Download only the videos uploaded in the last number of days
  • Set  Maximum download rate

 How To Install YouTube-DL On Ubuntu 18.04

Method 1:

Install youtube-dl using apt on Ubuntu, Run the following command to install youtube-dll in Ubuntu.

$ sudo apt-get install youtube-dl

Method 2:

You can even install youtube-dl using pip. For this method, you need to install pip and then youtube-dll. Install packagepython-pip:

$ sudo apt-get install python-pip

Now, Install youtube-dl with the following command:

$ sudo pip install youtube-dl

Method 3:

In this method, you can install youtube-dl from binary package. Run the following commands:

sudo wget https://yt-dl.org/latest/youtube-dl -O /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl
sudo chmod a+x /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl
hash -r

In order make it up to date, you can run following command to update youtube-dll in your system.

$ sudo youtube-dl -U

How To Use YouTube-dl On Ubuntu.

In order to download the high quality video, run the following command:

$ sudo youtube-dl example.com/watch?v=id

You can also download  the audio file using youtube-dl. Run the following command to download audio file:

youtube-dl --extract-audio --audio-format mp3 example.com/watch?v=id

If you want to download the video play-list, then run following command:

$ youtube-dl example.com/watch?v=id&list=listid

Meanwhile, if you are not used to with CLI to download the videos, then you can even install GUI version of the YouTube-dl.
