In this tutorial post, We are going to show you the method to update and upgrade Linux Mint offline in network system. Offline doesn’t mean that you don’t need to any internet access. Offline in the sens that you can install updates in one computer and install it in the rest of the computer in the networks.

It saves our internet bandwidth and time too. This process will download the updates in one computer and performs the offline updates and upgrade offline in the rest of the computers in the network.

We are going to use a tool called apt-offline to perform offline updates and upgrades. This tutorial is also applicable for the Ubuntu based operating system.

Run the following command to install apt-offline in Linux Mint

sudo apt install apt-offline

Run the following command in the system which has active internet connection.

sudo apt-get download python2.7-minimal python-minimal python3 python3-magic libmagic-mgc libmagic1 apt-offline

Above command will downloads the .deb packages of apt-offline. You need to copy these download .deb file to a USB drive and transfer it to the home directory of the target system where is not any active internet connectio. Run the following command on the target computer using:

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Now, You need to create a list of programs that need to be updated or upgraded in the computer with no internet  connection. Run the following command on the target system:

sudo apt-offline set ~/updatefile.sig

A file named updatefile.sig will be created in your home directory. You need to copy it to the USB drive and  insert the USB drive back into the computer with the internet connection. Now  you have to copy omgfile.sig and paste it to the home directory of that computer where you have plugged USB in.

You can download the list of programs and the updates with the following commands:

mkdir filepackages

filepackages will contain the downloaded files.

apt-offline get -d packages/ updatefile.sig

It will take time. After downloading the file, copy the directory packages to your USB or any external drive and copy it to the system’s home directory with no internet connection. Now run the following command to install those packages  in the system which has not any internet connection:

sudo apt-offline install packages/

Input ‘y’ when prompted and follow the on screen instruction.
