In this tutorial we will show you the method to upgrade from debian 8 jessie to debian 9 stretch. Popular operating system like ubuntu, linux mint and other are based on Debian. Debian 9 was released on June 17th, 2017.

How to Upgrade from Debian 8 Jessie to Debian 9 Stretch

At first login as a root user in debian.

su -

and update your existing software with the command below

apt update

apt upgrade

after updating, its time to edit the source file.

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

In the above file, change all word “jessie” to “stretch”.

Again run the command below.

apt update

apt upgrade

You can choose yes or no in the pop up like below.

How to Upgrade from Debian 8 Jessie to Debian 9 Stretch

Run full upgrade.

apt dist-upgrade

here you can remove obsolete/unneeded software packages with the command below.

apt autoremove

apt clean

reboot your operating system now.

shutdown -r now

Check your Debian version.

lsb_release -a

Following text should be displayed

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID:	Debian
Description:	Debian GNU/Linux 9.0 (stretch)
Release:	9.0
Codename:	stretch
